Daniel Fried is Professor of Chinese at the University of Alberta.  He is a well-known scholar of classical Chinese literature and philosophy, with a particular focus on Chinese theories of language. He has published two previous scholarly books, one on Daoist philosophies of language in early medieval China, and one on Song dynasty print history. He is also a frequent guest speaker at universities across China, and has held several leadership positions within scholarly associations in the US and Canada.

Though born and educated in the US, he has become a naturalized Canadian citizen after living in the country for many years. He and his wife live with a surprisingly calm orange cat.
